Summary
The test proved our theory that there isn’t one driver out there for everyone. We all had favourite models that suited our swings and personal preferences.
What was interesting was that if you really love the look and feel of a particular model, then an expert is likely to be able to find a shaft, loft and set-up that will get fairly close to your maximum performance levels. While that was the case, it was also clear that within the current driver market there are models designed for specific types of golfer.
For anyone with a quicker than average swing speed or who has struggled in the past with a ballooning ball flight and too much spin, there’s never been a better time to buy a driver. Rather than having to go right down in loft and sacrifice launch as a result of too much spin, there’s a wide range of options with a forward centre of gravity position.
The low-and-back centre of gravity position is certainly still the best choice for slower-than-average swing speeds, and for those who need as much help as possible getting the ball up in the air quickly.
From the personal perspectives of our testers, there were some interesting results. Mike’s swing speed might suggest that he wouldn’t be the ideal choice for a low-and-forward centre of gravity position, as they’re often perceived as being for fast swingers. At the same time, though, the low-and-forward position brought spin down and added distance.
Paul still found that drivers with a low-and-back centre of gravity position offered the best forgiveness, but low-and-forward-positioned models with plenty of loft provided added distance on shots from the middle. That left a decision to make about which compromise to make, depending on the golf courses regularly played and whether there would be added benefit from finding more fairways or hitting it further.
Neil was able to control spin to great effect, but leaned towards the larger-looking heads behind the ball, which injected confidence and helped keep the ball under control.
The performance of our drivers contrasted greatly, and it was interesting to note the huge differences that tweaking the adjustability made. It’s refreshing to see such differing methods and designs, from manufacturers all trying to help golfers hit the ball longer and straighter.
Use this test to narrow your search, and then get a fitting from an expert who can tweak the driver to your needs. Go through that process and we can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed with the results.
